Terms of Service
1. Acceptance of these terms
These Terms of Service govern your access to and use of r*cap, the website at rcap.io and its associated mobile applications (together, the "Service"), operated by Lost Property Labs LLC, a California limited liability company ("we", "us"). By creating an account, listening to an episode, or otherwise using the Service, you agree to be bound by these terms. If you do not agree to them, please do not use the Service.
You must be at least 16 years old, or the age of digital consent in your country if that is higher, to use the Service.
2. What the Service is
r*cap produces short audio and text summaries of publicly available research papers. Those summaries are generated by automated systems — large language models and text-to-speech models — from the text of papers published by third parties. Every summary links to, and attributes, the paper it was derived from.
r*cap is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or reviewed by the authors, institutions, or publishers of the papers we summarise. We add, remove, and change the papers covered by the Service at our discretion, and we may modify or discontinue features at any time.
3. Your account
Some features require an account. You are responsible for the accuracy of the information you provide, for keeping access to your email address and any sign-in credentials secure, and for activity that occurs under your account. Tell us promptly at legal@rcap.io if you believe your account has been accessed without your permission.
You may delete your account at any time from your Profile. Deleting your account removes your personal data as described in our Privacy Policy.
4. Plus subscriptions and billing
r*cap offers a paid plan, Plus, at $12 per month. Subscriptions renew automatically each month until cancelled, and are billed through the payment provider used by the platform you subscribed on — our web payment processor, or the Apple App Store or Google Play if you subscribed inside a mobile app.
You can cancel at any time; cancellation takes effect at the end of the billing period you have already paid for, and you keep Plus access until then. Except where refunds are required by law, or by the store policies that apply to a purchase made through an app store, payments are non-refundable. We may change our prices on reasonable prior notice; a price change never applies to a period you have already been charged for.
5. Acceptable use
The Service is for your personal, non-commercial use. You agree not to: scrape, bulk-download, or systematically copy content from the Service; redistribute, resell, or republish our summaries or audio as your own or as a competing product; use the Service to train machine learning models; attempt to gain unauthorised access to our systems or another user's account; interfere with, overload, or circumvent any technical limits or rate limits of the Service; or use the Service in violation of any applicable law.
6. Intellectual property
The research papers summarised on r*cap belong to their authors, institutions, and publishers, and are governed by whatever licence those rights holders have applied to them. Nothing on the Service transfers any right in an underlying paper to you.
Our summaries, audio recordings, site design, and software are AI-generated derivative commentary and original work owned by r*cap or licensed to us. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to access and listen to them for your own use. Quoting a short extract with attribution and a link is welcome; wholesale reproduction is not.
If you are a rights holder and believe content on the Service infringes your rights, contact legal@rcap.io and we will review the matter promptly.
7. AI-generated content — important
Summaries on r*cap are produced by automated systems without per-item human review. They may omit important qualifications, misstate results, misattribute findings, or contain factual errors, and audio narration may mispronounce technical terms. A summary is a pointer to a paper, not a substitute for reading it.
Nothing on the Service is professional, medical, legal, financial, or investment advice. Do not rely on a summary for any decision that matters. Always verify claims against the original paper, which we link from every episode.
8. Termination
You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access if you breach these terms, if we are required to by law, or if we discontinue the Service. If we terminate your access to a paid subscription other than for breach, we will refund the unused portion of your current billing period. Sections that by their nature should survive termination — intellectual property, disclaimers, limitation of liability — do so.
9. Disclaimers and limitation of liability
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free, or that any summary is accurate or complete.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, r*cap will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or exemplary damages, or for any loss of profits, data, or goodwill, arising out of or relating to your use of the Service. Our total aggregate liability for any claim relating to the Service is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim arose, or fifty US dollars. Some jurisdictions do not allow these exclusions, in which case they apply to you only to the extent permitted.
10. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the Service evolves. When we do, we will revise the "last updated" date at the top of this page, and for material changes we will give notice through the Service or by email before they take effect. Continuing to use the Service after a change takes effect means you accept the revised terms.
11. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, United States, without regard to its conflict of law principles. Any dispute relating to these terms or the Service will be brought in the state or federal courts located in California.
12. Contact
Questions about these terms, or about anything on this page, can be sent to legal@rcap.io. The Service is operated by Lost Property Labs LLC, California, United States.
